What it's about

This is the concluding volume of Colonel James Tod's Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, a foundational study of the Rajput states of central and western India. Drawing on chronicles, bardic traditions, inscriptions and his own extensive travels as a British political agent, Tod records the histories of the ruling houses, their genealogies, wars, customs and monuments, carrying his sweeping account through to its close.

The work is animated by Tod's admiration for Rajput valour, honour and feudal loyalty, which he consciously likened to European chivalry. It is concerned with dynasty and lineage, with the preservation of oral and antiquarian tradition, and with the meeting of Indian history and a Romantic-era European sensibility. Why it still matters

Tod's Annals introduced Rajasthan's history to a wide readership and long shaped how the Rajput past was understood, both in Europe and in India. Though modern scholars read it critically, aware of its romanticism and its colonial vantage, it remains an indispensable and richly detailed source, preserving traditions that might otherwise have gone unrecorded.
