Don Juan — book cover

Books

Don Juan.

The legendary seducer reimagined as the hero of a sprawling, satirical verse epic. Byron's Don Juan is less a wicked libertine than a wandering innocent, the excuse for a poem that mocks hypocrisy, war, and society with dazzling wit.

About this book

The name promises a rake, but the poem delivers something slyer. Here the notorious Don Juan is swept along by events and by women more than he ever masterminds his own conquests, an innocent abroad whose adventures give his author license to say almost anything about the world.

What it's about

Byron takes the old legend of the great seducer and turns it inside out, following his young hero from a scandal in his native Spain out across the wider world through shipwreck, love affairs, slavery, war, and the drawing rooms of high society. The story matters less than the voice narrating it: digressive, irreverent, and forever breaking off to comment on love, fame, money, poets, and human folly.

Themes

The poem is a sustained assault on hypocrisy in all its forms, sexual, political, and literary. Byron sets natural feeling against social pretence, romantic idealism against hard experience, and glory against the squalid reality of war. Its comedy is worldly and its melancholy never far beneath the surface.

Why it still matters

Few long poems remain this readable, this funny, or this modern in temper. Byron's conversational verse, his willingness to puncture his own grand moments, and his refusal of easy piety still feel fresh, and his mockery of cant has lost none of its edge.

Who it's for

Readers who suspect they don't enjoy poetry and are about to be proved wrong, admirers of satire and wit, and anyone drawn to the Romantic era's most charming troublemaker.
