Bathsheba Everdene is independent, capable and headstrong, and when she takes charge of her late uncle's farm she becomes the pivot of the community. Thomas Hardy sets three men in her path: the steadfast shepherd Gabriel Oak, who loves her patiently; the prosperous, obsessive farmer Boldwood; and the dashing, faithless soldier Sergeant Troy. Their intertwining fortunes play out across the seasons of rural Wessex, through harvest and storm, courtship and calamity, in a story that is by turns idyllic and quietly devastating.
