About this book
The novel is set in the tenements of New York City in the 1890s. Maggie lives with her family in a single room where arguments break out often. She takes a job in a factory and moves through the nearby saloons and dance halls. Crane records the daily patterns of work, drink, and street life without explanation or judgment. He drew the details from time spent in the Bowery. The book presents these conditions as they stood at the close of the nineteenth century.
