About this book
Jim Burden recalls his arrival in Nebraska as a boy. He settles on his grandparents’ farm near Black Hawk. There he meets Ántonia Shimerda and her family, recent immigrants from Bohemia. The two children explore the prairie together. They watch the planting and harvest. They listen to stories from older settlers. As adults their lives diverge. Jim leaves for school and work in the East. Ántonia stays on the land. The book records Jim’s memories of both the place and the people who shaped his youth.
