Out of the fourteenth century comes one of the finest of all Arthurian poems, a story of a beheading game, a fearful journey and a knight's quiet, private trial.

At King Arthur's Christmas feast a huge green stranger rides in and offers a strange challenge: any knight may strike him a blow with his axe, on condition that he return the blow a year hence. Sir Gawain accepts, and must then set out through winter and wilderness to seek the Green Knight and honour the terms of the bargain. Along the way he is a guest in a castle where courtesy, temptation and a hunting host set a subtler test than any axe-stroke, and the true nature of the challenge is slowly revealed.
