About this book

Lost in a dark wood at the midpoint of life, a poet begins a journey that will carry him through the entire architecture of the afterlife. Dante's Divine Comedy is one of the towering achievements of world literature, a vision so complete it seems to contain an age.

What it's about

The poem unfolds in three great movements. In Inferno, the poet, guided by the shade of Virgil, descends through the circles of Hell, where the damned suffer punishments precisely fitted to their sins. In Purgatorio, he climbs the mountain where souls are cleansed and prepared for grace. Finally, in Paradiso, led now by his beloved Beatrice, he ascends through the spheres of Heaven toward a vision of divine love itself. Along the way he meets popes and poets, lovers and traitors, the famous and the forgotten, each encounter a story in miniature.

Themes

Justice and mercy, sin and redemption, and the long ascent of the soul toward God give the poem its structure. But Dante is also writing about love, politics, exile and the Italy of his own turbulent day, settling scores and honouring friends. Above all it is a poem about desire, the longing that misleads us and the longing that, rightly ordered, leads us home.

Why it still matters

The Comedy gave the modern imagination much of its picture of the afterlife, and it gave Italian literature its foundation. Poets from every century have measured themselves against it. Its fusion of intellectual rigour, emotional depth and sheer visionary invention has never been surpassed, and its portraits of human frailty remain startlingly alive.

Who it's for

Readers ready to meet a genuine masterpiece, lovers of poetry and myth, and anyone drawn to the great questions of judgement, love and the fate of the soul. Demanding, yes, but among the most rewarding journeys a reader can take.
