The great opera house is troubled by strange accidents, a haunted box, and demands issued by a figure the company calls the Opera Ghost. When the young singer Christine Daaé rises suddenly to stardom, guided by a mysterious voice she believes to be an Angel of Music, her childhood friend Raoul is drawn into a rivalry with an unseen master. Behind it all is Erik, a genius of music and architecture whose ruined face has driven him from the world of the living into the labyrinth beneath the stage.

Themes

Leroux weaves together romance, detection, and gothic horror, but his deepest subject is the longing to be loved despite monstrousness. The mask is the book's great emblem, standing for the gulf between the beauty a person can create and the ugliness the world sees. Obsession, jealousy, pity, and the fragile line between devotion and possession all press against one another.

Why it still matters

Adapted endlessly for stage and screen, the story has become a modern myth, yet the original novel retains a strangeness and moral complexity the adaptations often smooth away. Erik remains one of literature's most affecting monsters, terrifying and heartbreaking at once.
