Robert Jones Jr.'s debut novel centres on Samuel and Isaiah, two enslaved men on a Mississippi plantation whose devotion to each other sets them apart. Their bond offers refuge amid unrelenting cruelty, but it also unsettles the order of the plantation and the fears of those around them, including another enslaved man drawn toward the enslavers' religion. Moving among many voices, and reaching back toward an African past, the narrative widens into a chorus that encompasses a whole community and its history.
