Four Arthurian Romances gathers the great verse tales of Chrétien de Troyes, the twelfth-century French poet who did more than anyone to shape the legend of King Arthur's knights. The collection typically brings together Erec and Enide, Cligès, Yvain (the Knight of the Lion) and Lancelot (the Knight of the Cart), here in English translation. Each follows a knight of the Round Table through adventure, ordeal and the demands of love, weaving quest and romance into stories that test the hero's worth against both the perils of the world and the claims of the heart.
