About this book
Charles Dickens wrote Hard Times in the 1850s. The novel takes place in Coketown, a fictional manufacturing center in England. It centers on Thomas Gradgrind, who runs a school devoted to facts alone. His children grow up under this system. Josiah Bounderby, a self-made man, runs a factory in the same town. Stephen Blackpool works at the mill there. Sissy Jupe joins the Gradgrind household after her father leaves the circus. The narrative shows how these people respond to the demands of their time and place.
