About this book

An eccentric mineralogist deciphers a coded parchment left by a medieval alchemist, and reads in it an invitation no man of science could refuse: a route to the very heart of the planet.

What it's about

Journey to the Center of the Earth follows Professor Lidenbrock, his anxious nephew Axel, and their stoic Icelandic guide Hans as they descend through an extinct Icelandic volcano into the world beneath. Down there they discover vast caverns, a subterranean sea, electrical storms and creatures long thought extinct, surviving hardship, hunger and awe as they push toward the centre and, eventually, back toward the light.

Themes

Verne celebrates scientific curiosity and the nineteenth-century hunger to map every blank space on the globe. The novel dramatises the tension between reckless obsession and prudent caution, between the known surface world and the immensity hidden below, and delights throughout in geology, palaeontology and the sheer romance of discovery.

Why it still matters

A cornerstone of science fiction and adventure writing, it helped teach popular literature how to marry rigorous fact with soaring imagination. Its influence runs through more than a century of lost-world stories, films and games, and its central thrill, that wonders might lie just beneath our ordinary ground, has never lost its pull.

Who it's for

For young and old readers of classic adventure, for fans of speculative fiction curious about its roots, and for anyone who still feels a shiver at the thought of what the earth might be hiding.
