Jane Austen began Sanditon in the final months of her life. The story starts in a quiet inland village. It soon shifts to a stretch of empty coast where a family has begun building houses. They hope to create a bathing place for paying guests. New arrivals come for the air and the water. They meet the residents already on hand. The chapters record their talk about health, money, and the changes under way. Austen stopped work after twelve chapters. What remains is the opening section of an unfinished novel.
