Pascal's Pensées.

They were found in pieces after his early death, notes pinned and bundled toward a book he never lived to write. Yet the Pensées may be more powerful for being unfinished, catching a brilliant, anguished mind in the act of thinking rather than in the composure of a completed argument.

What it's about

Pascal, already famous as a mathematician and physicist, set out to write a defence of the Christian faith aimed at doubters. What survives is a collection of fragments, some polished, some barely a sentence, that circle around the human condition: our greatness and our misery, our terror of silence and solitude, and the strategies we invent to avoid confronting our own mortality. It is here that his celebrated argument about betting on belief, and his image of the human being as a thinking reed, appear.

Themes

The book turns again and again on the paradox of a creature both noble and wretched, capable of grasping the infinite yet undone by boredom. Pascal is merciless about distraction, about the ways we fill our days to avoid thought, and searching about the limits of reason when it reaches toward ultimate questions.

Why it still matters

Strip away the theological frame and the psychology remains uncannily current: his diagnosis of restlessness, amusement, and the fear of being alone with oneself reads like a description of the present age. Believer and sceptic alike have found the Pensées impossible to dismiss.
