What it's about

In a brooding medieval castle, the tyrannical lord Manfred sees his line thrown into crisis when his son dies beneath a supernatural apparition. Fearing the collapse of his usurped dynasty, Manfred sets in motion a scheme of forced marriage and pursuit that drags his household toward ruin, while ancient prophecies stir and the castle itself seems to conspire against him. Ghostly portents, secret passages, and a mounting sense of doom carry the story to its reckoning.

Themes

Walpole's novel dwells on usurpation and inherited guilt, on the collapse of illegitimate power, and on the return of a suppressed past to claim its due. Tyranny, terror, and the helplessness of the innocent play out against a machinery of the supernatural that expresses fears the daylight world tries to deny.

Why it still matters

First published in 1764, this is the founding text of gothic literature, the direct ancestor of everything from Mrs Radcliffe and Poe to the modern horror novel. To read it is to stand at the source, and to see the conventions of the haunted castle and the doomed bloodline invented before one's eyes.
