What it's about

The Sceptical Chymist, published in 1661, is Robert Boyle's celebrated dialogue in which he interrogates the reigning theories of matter: the four Aristotelian elements and the three principles of the alchemists, or spagyrists, salt, sulphur and mercury. Through the voices of his speakers, Boyle marshals experiment and argument to show that these traditional schemes do not withstand scrutiny, and he pleads toward a more empirical understanding of chemical substances.
