Kim follows an orphaned Irish boy as he moves through late nineteenth-century British India and its networks of espionage. He travels the Grand Trunk Road and rides the new railways. He meets soldiers, priests, and traders from many regions. The boy picks up dialects and habits as he goes. British officers notice his skills and draw him into their work. The country itself, from mountain passes to crowded cities, shapes his path. Loyalties and messages pass between strangers on trains and in markets. The story stays close to these movements and encounters.
