About this book
Omoo continues the account of a sailor in the South Pacific. He takes a berth on a whaling ship after earlier travels. The vessel cruises among islands in search of whales. Shortages and disagreements arise among the crew. The narrator parts from the ship and spends time on shore. He stays in villages and moves between them by foot or canoe. The text notes the routines he sees and the people he meets. Melville wrote the book from memory of his own months at sea in the 1840s.
