About this book

A company of travellers gathers at a London inn, agrees to a storytelling contest on the road to Canterbury, and sets off — and English poetry is never quite the same again.

What it's about

Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales frames a cross-section of medieval England as a group of pilgrims journeying to the shrine of Thomas Becket. To pass the miles they tell stories, and the stories fit their tellers: a knight offers high romance, a miller a bawdy farce, the Wife of Bath a spirited defence of experience over authority. This volume pairs the tales with a selection of Chaucer's other poems, showing the range of a writer equally at home in comedy, philosophy and courtly feeling.

Themes

Chaucer is fascinated by how people present themselves and how the truth leaks out anyway. Social class, faith, marriage, money and desire all come under his amused, unsparing eye. Above all the book is about voice — the way a story reveals its narrator — and the sheer variety of human character crowded onto a single road.

Why it still matters

Written in Middle English at the end of the fourteenth century, this is one of the earliest great works composed in the ordinary language of England rather than Latin or French, and it helped make that language a literary one. Its portraits feel astonishingly modern: the con artists, the pilgrims with something to hide, the arguments about who really holds power in a marriage all still land. Few books are at once so historically important and so genuinely funny.

Who it's for

For readers curious about the roots of English literature, for anyone who loves storytelling that delights in human folly, and for students meeting Chaucer for the first time. Rewarding for those willing to lean into its older idiom, where the reward is a poet who feels like a companion across six centuries.
